2021 was a year when fear became hope, marked by the end of pandemic uncertainty which began to indicate a return to normality, not only for Europe but for the entire Humanity. The Empress Theophano Prize, focused on the critical role science serves in society and its contribution to the Common Good, was -in a sense- a celebration of this transition. In an atmosphere permeated by strong emotion and heartfelt respect, the couple who developed the first vaccine against the novel coronavirus was honoured.
